Dorothy Mae Skeen

Dorothy Mae (Reiniche) Skeen, age 100, of Boerne, TX and formerly of Kankakee, passed away Monday, April 24, 2023 at Menger Springs Cibolo House Assisted Living in Boerne, TX. Dorothy was born July 6, 1922 in Limestone Township, the daughter of John & Berdella (Fowler) Reiniche. Dorothy recounted working at Bear Brand Hosiery in Kankakee when she was a young girl. On December 7 (Pearl Harbor Day), Dorothy became engaged to Kenneth Skeen. They decided to be married before Kenneth left for the U.S. Army. They married December 22, 1941 at St. Ansgar’s Danish Lutheran Church. After the war, the couple settled in Kankakee. Dorothy was a homemaker and beautiful seamstress. She made clothes for her daughters, friends, family, and others, even for her daughter’s doll. When Wanda left for college, Dorothy replaced her as a sales person at Tari and Todd Shop. When the owners retired, she went to work for Donna Karlock at Donna’s Youngtown. She LOVED those employments. Dorothy lived at Butterfield Assisted Living for 8 years until the death of her sister, when she moved to San Antonio,TX. She lived at Cibolo House Menger Springs for almost 10 years and celebrated her 100th birthday there. Surviving are two daughters, Wanda (Dale) Schaufel of San Antonio, TX and Marla Skeen-Wasson of Oceanside, California; three grandsons, Jeffrey (Josie) Schaufel, Jarrett Schaufel, and Dean (Renee) Bayston; seven great-grandchildren, Jessica Perez, Dylan (Brianna) Bayston, Jody (Zack) Miller, Taylor (Anastasia) Schaufel, Connor Schaufel, Trevor Schaufel, and Reagan Schaufel; five great-great-grandchildren, Jason Bayston, Isiah Bayston, Isabella Perez, Braden Miller, and Mia Miller. Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Mildred Harms; and her four brothers, Robert, Lester, Leroy, and Charles. A memorial service was held at her residence on May 5. Visitation will be held 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 14, 2023 at Schreffler Funeral Home in Kankakee. An additional visitation will be held 10:00 a.m. - 10:45 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023, also at the funeral home. A graveside service will immediately follow at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 15, 2023 at Mound Grove Gardens in Kankakee.
